How we’re helping Fantastic Fanatics support sports clubs during the Pandemic

Barry Munro is the founder of Fantastic Fanatics – the UK’s only dedicated sports fundraising platform. It links online and in-store retailers with fans to provide additional income for sports clubs.

During lockdown, with sports fixtures cancelled and clubs facing huge financial losses, Fantastic Fanatics gives sports fans the opportunity to support their favourite club without it costing them a penny.

It’s a lifeline for sports teams facing financial hardship, and a way for fans to feel connected to the clubs they love. “When none of us are allowed to go and watch our favourite teams play, and clubs both at grassroots and national level are struggling for cash, this is the perfect way for fans to still show some support during lockdown”, says Barry.

Sports fans can sign up to Fantastic Fanatics to help their sports clubs, whether that be national organisations, professional clubs or, local community groups. From there, members are directed towards retailers – including B&Q, Sky, John Lewis, Boots and ASOS and KFC –  via a user-friendly online dashboard. They then link their payment card using Fidel’s secure SDK and shop as usual. Whenever members shop with those retailers, up to 10% of the transaction value is paid directly to the fan’s chosen sports club.

“The technology is next generation” says Barry. “It means fans can generate income without leaving their homes, and  club members and committees can instantly see how much money they have raised in near real-time.”

The platform, originally developed in Scotland, has been welcomed with open arms by sports bodies including Scottish Swimming, Scottish Hockey and Club 1872. Now, Barry has his sights set on other clubs across the UK, with Hull City Supporters Trust, Durham Cricket and Millwall FC recently enrolling.

At Fidel, we’re happy to be helping bring sports clubs and supporters together. Platforms like Fantastic Fanatics are an innovative way to create a sense of community during challenging times, and we’re proud to be supporting Barry and his team as it grows.
